Staircases That Elevate Your Home’s Design

Modern staircase with wooden treads and metal railings going up

Staircases used to be an afterthought in the home – just a way to get up and down the different levels. They were often hidden away and weren’t paid any attention. Now, trends are changing, and the staircase is getting its turn in the spotlight.

Staircases can give a space tons of character and act as the finishing touch that ties the entire home together. If you’re looking for a way to make your staircase stand out, we put together a list of some of the biggest trends at the moment.

Modern Style

A sleek, modern staircase has been in style for a while, and the trend is here to stay. A modern staircase has clean lines that mix natural wooden stairs with iron balusters. This type of staircase looks best in a minimalist-style home which has also grown in popularity in recent years.

Eclectic Staircases

On the other side of the spectrum, we have the eclectic staircase. This is for homeowners who aren’t afraid of some color and vivid patterns. One idea is to tile each step in a different pattern. For this, you could choose a color pallet and go wild. The banister can also be any color you’d like – the brighter, the better. There are no rules with the eclectic staircase, and it seems like this is a trend you either love or hate.

Floating Stairs

If you’re willing to take a risk and do something a little more “out there,” you could be one of the first to hop on the floating staircase trend. The stairs have open risers, so the steps actually look like they are floating. The baluster could be clear – either a light wire connected to an iron handrail or a glass baluster to make the steps stand out. We also like to include tread lights on floating stairs so that they can be easily seen at night, plus it looks great!

Rustic Look

Earthy, neutral tones are popular throughout the home, and the rustic staircase will perfectly match this trend. This style does not have to be overly intricate. In fact, we like for the railing and baluster to be more on the minimal side. The key here is to have the natural features shine through. We like to include raw materials – unfinished wood, stone, and metal in this staircase.

Curvy Staircases

If you want to make a statement, but don’t have a ton of space, let’s add a spiral staircase! Curvy, spiral staircases will be the focal point of your living room and are surprisingly space efficient. They look great in modern-style homes, but with the right materials, they can be the highlight of other style homes as well.

Traditional

If you have a more elegant décor style, there’s nothing wrong with sticking with a traditional-style staircase. These staircases should include some beautiful, intricate woodwork on newel posts to make the stairs stand out. To complement the traditional look, you could include some floral vintage-style wallpaper on the wall next to the stairs.
